2011: Tracy Morgan Returns to Nashville to Apologize

In June 2011, Tracy Morgan found himself at the center of a national controversy. During a June 3 stand-up show in Nashville, the 30 Rock star delivered an anti-gay rant that audience members and advocacy groups called hateful.

Morgan apologized publicly, and then went further. At the invitation of GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios, he returned to Nashville on June 21 to meet with people who had been offended, including audience members. Days earlier he had also met with homeless LGBT youth in New York. Speaking briefly to reporters afterward, he said he wanted to help rather than hurt.

The episode became part of a long-running debate in comedy about where provocative material crosses the line, a debate that continues today.
