In 2011, Basketmouth brought back the show that helped launch his career. Laffs n Jamz, the comedy and music night the Nigerian comedian (born Bright Okpocha) created through his company Barons World Entertainment, had started at the University of Benin in 2000 and later ran monthly in Lagos before going dark for lack of funding and sponsorship.
The relaunch, announced for June 2011 at Ember Creek in Ikoyi, Lagos, mixed Nigerian comedians and musicians with international guests. The first lineup included comics such as I Go Dye, Gandoki, Buchi and Klint da Drunk, alongside musicians including Naeto C and M.I.
It was a sign of how far Nigerian comedy had come, and of Basketmouth’s role in building the live-comedy industry that now sends its stars on tours from Lagos to London.
