2012: Trevor Noah Makes History on The Tonight Show

In 2012, Trevor Noah set out to conquer America. Already a star at home, where he had gone from amateur clubs to selling out big theaters with one-man shows like The Daywalker, Noah had relocated to Southern California the previous summer.

That year he did a five-minute set on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, becoming the first African comedian to perform stand-up on the show. He toured the U.S., including the South, opened for Gabriel Iglesias and began developing a Comedy Central special. He said he wanted to be known simply as a comedian, not as “the South African comedian.”

Three years later he would be named host of The Daily Show. In 2012, he was still the newcomer working American rooms one set at a time.
