Chris Rock arrived in South Africa for his No Apologies tour as the country reeled from a wave of attacks on foreign nationals that left dozens dead and displaced tens of thousands of people.
Asked about the violence, Rock pushed back on the idea that it was mainly about race or nationality. In his view, poverty was the root of it, and he summed up the attacks as poor people turning on other poor people.
It was a characteristically blunt take from a comic whose stand-up has long treated money and class as just as important as race in understanding who gets hurt.
