Chris Rock’s No Apologies tour stop in South Africa came with an unwanted twist: an elaborate hoax that left the comedian believing he was about to be arrested.
Letters claiming to come from an international police organization asked South African authorities to detain Rock over a fabricated allegation involving a minor in Britain. Rock’s lawyers went to court in Johannesburg and secured an order that he could not be arrested without a proper warrant. Local reports said a man posing as a prosecutor even appeared in court urging that he be taken into custody.
South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority later confirmed that the whole thing was a prank connected to an American reality TV show, which was not named. Officials said those responsible could face contempt of court charges.
