Did Chris Rock actually go to Stuyvesant High School?

Chris Rock
Semper incensus asked:

I read online that Chris Rock graduated from Stuyvesant, which by the way is one of the most prestigious high schools in New York City. Aside from this, they say he was president of the Black Students League and the chess team.

I’m sorry, but I don’t think I believe this. I think someone started this as a rumor, but it says all over the Internet that Stuyvesant was the high school Chris Rock went to. Does anyone actually believe this, and if so can anyone find a reliable website saying which year he graduated?
Does anyone know the name of the high school he actually went to?
Why are you people assuming that he wasn’t smart enough to attend Stuyvesant? It’s not a matter of Chris Rock’s “intelligence” to get in, it’s that he grew up in a very poor neighbourhood so he probably wasn’t able to afford classes to take the Stuy test. The test is so competitive that the only way to get in pretty much is to take classes for 1-3 years to be prepared for the exam. If his family was so poor that his mother had to wash her underwear in the sink, he most likely did not go to Stuyvesant, which is what I’m asking about.

  1. According to these websites, Chris Rock DID attend Stuyvesant High School, but dropped out.

And yes, I’m a New Yorker (and a substitute teacher for the NYC Board of Education) so I know very well that Stuyvesant is a very exclusive school (almost like a private school that happens to be run by the Board of Ed)

Why exactly do you have a hard time believing that Chris Rock went to Stuyvesant? He’s a really brilliant guy, and his mother and father put a great value on education and made many sacrifices to get the best education possible for their kids.

That sounds like the typical Stuyvesant parent – so why is it hard to believe that Chris Rock went to Stuyvesant.

    I HOPE it’s not because he’s Black???

Believe it or not, incredible as it might seem, there are quite a few African American students who go to the elite Board of Ed schools like Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Cardozo and Hunter College High School

  2. Yes, he went there. But he did not graduate. It’s not a rumor! You don’t know that man, so how are you going to ASSUME he’s not smart or intelligent enough to attend Stuyvesant High? Find your own “reliable website.”
