BET handed Kevin Hart the keys to its biggest night of the year in 2011. Hart hosted the BET Awards live from Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on June 26, in the middle of his record-setting Laugh at My Pain tour.
The booking made sense. Hart had come up through BET as host of the stand-up showcase Comic View: One Mic Stand, his 2009 Comedy Central special I’m a Grown Little Man had been one of the network’s best performers, and he had lead roles lined up in Think Like a Man and The Five-Year Engagement.
Hosting the awards put Hart in front of the biggest audience of his career to that point and cemented his place as the go-to host for big Black entertainment events, a role he would return to again and again.
