Bernie Mac is headed back to television. The comedian has signed on to narrate and executive produce Welcome to the Family, an unscripted pilot for NBC from producer Ben Silverman, the executive behind the American version of The Office.
The idea borrows from Mac’s 2005 comedy Guess Who, itself a reworking of the 1967 classic Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Each episode would follow a couple from different religious or ethnic backgrounds as one partner meets the other’s family for the first time, with all the awkwardness that implies.
It is Mac’s first TV project since The Bernie Mac Show wrapped its run on Fox. He also has a busy summer on the big screen, with roles in Ocean’s Thirteen and Transformers.
